West Kootenay Landscape Painting - Down in the Valley

Down in the Valley
30x30 inches, acrylic on canvas

This West Kootenay landscape painting was painted with the intention of evoking a mid-summer afternoon in the woods.

If you listen carefully, you should be able to hear the breeze rustling the leaves in the trees and a miriad of insects humming about the ground cover.  The day is warm and sunlit and the afternoon stretches well into evening before we realize that it's time to head home.

Painted with dozens of sublte shades of yellow, green, orange and blue.  Enjoy the detail in this piece and it's lovely texture.

This painting is still available.  For purchase information, please contact the artist @

Birch Trees Painting - Midnight Birches

Midnight Birches
18 x 24 inches, acrylic on canvas

This birch tree painting was inspired by some photos I took of a harvest moon.  I was surprised to see that even though the moon shone golden orange, everything else in the shot was somewhat blue.  A magical night indeed!

Birch Trees Painting - Lake Birch

Lake Birch
20x24 inches, acrylic on canvas

I always love painting birch trees.  This painting was inspired by a walk along the water.  It was a spring day and there was a bit of a cool breeze as I headed south, the mountains folding on down the lake, the tide a little high from spring run-off, and the birch trees, oh yes, caught up in the breeze, made a wonderful rustling sound.

Kootenay Landscape Painting - Six Pines

Six Pines
8x10 inches, acrylic on canvas

A number of new small works have been added to my website.  You can check them out @ artistsuzannemclean.com.  I have been playing with process yet again.  Those of you who are familiar with my work will notice some style differences in the sky and water.  I have been working again with painting knives, incorporating knife and brushwork together to see what happens.

West Kootenay Landscape Painting - This Corner of the World

This Corner of the World
12x12 inches, acrylic on canvas

It seems my love of rocks and trees along the water never ends. The landscape here in the West Kootenays never disappoints, rain or shine. This West Kootenay landscape painting is one of my favourites this year so far.

It started out as a quick sketch. But going from sketch to finished work is always a mystery. I never know just how a painting will turn out. Mostly I go by feel and hope for the best, expecting to be surprised.

This is the sketch in question. I thought it might be interesting to show where the seed of thought begins in my creative process. As you can well imagine, the journey from sketch to finished painting is what makes painting so enjoyable.

Kootenay Lake Landscape Painting - This Side of the Lake

This Side of the Lake
11x14 inches, acrylic on canvas

This Kootenay Lake landscape painting was inspired by summer's at the lake, walking along the edge of the water, skipping stones, sometimes wading out to sandbars that appear in shallow areas.

I find this lake has a great calming affect on me. It can change the outcome of any day, just by being near it. Walking along it's edge can even be a meditation in a way, if I quiet my mind, and just listen.

Kootenay Lake Landscape Painting - Down the Lake

Down the Lake
12x24 inches, acrylic on canvas

This Kootenay Lake landscape painting is taken from several photographs from numerous drives down the lake. I wanted to capture the folding of the mountains as they appear to get smaller and smaller the closer we get to the West Arm section of the lake.

I wanted the birch trees to have a certain wind-swept look, so I used my artistic license to create them just the way I wanted them. I am still all fired up about birch trees after the painting I did for the vacation rental. So you'll be seeing more of them in the near future, I'm sure.

Valley Voice Article - Suzanne McLean's art on display at the BlueBelle

Valley Voice article, Wednesday, March 21, 2012

I was recently featured in the Valley Voice regarding my new spring line-up at The BlueBelle. Thank you Valley Voice! I am ecstatic to see this little article in the paper and in full colour too!

I know we've been hibernating somewhat all winter long. So I thought I'd get the word out that spring is here, despite the two feet of fresh snow on my front lawn.

Valley Voice article, Wednesday, March 21, 2012

To see any of the paintings on display, please come down to The BlueBelle in person in Kaslo, B.C., or check out my artist website: artistsuzannemclean.com.

White Birch Tree Painting - Birch Grove

Birch Grove
18x24 inches, acrylic on canvas

If you're not familiar with the Kootenays, it's an area teeming with art and artists. There is art everywhere, every shop, every café, every restaurant. I just love all the annual artwalks when art can be found in even the most unlikely of places. This idea has now been extended to include a very lovely vacation rental where this white birch tree painting is for sale. Thank you Aimee!

Canadian Lake Painting - Sunset Lake

Sunset Lake
24x24 inches, acrylic on canvas

This Canadian lake painting is another new painting featured in my new spring line-up at the BlueBelle. This one was done just after Sunset Woods (a few posts down). I was so excited with my sunset I thought I'd try it again.

I still managed to get a lot of blues and greens in there, but lots of colour too. It's hard to get away from blue and green when you paint the landscapes I paint. I think most of British Columbia is blue and green unless you wander into the desert.

Canadian Forest Landscape Painting - Walking Through the Underbrush

Walking Through the Underbrush
24x24 inches, acrylic on canvas

I installed my new spring line-up of artwork at the BlueBelle gallery space this morning, and the first painting sold within an hour! Unfortunately, the battery in my camera died, so I was unable to take photographs. So here's another sneak peak of what's up!

This Canadian forest landscape painting: Walking Through the Underbrush, has a really nice hit of colour for spring. Let's see if it will remain on the wall long enough to photograph.

Canadian Landscape Painting - Sunset Woods

Link
Sunset Woods
24x36 inches, acrylic on canvas

This Canadian landscape painting is a featured piece in my new spring line-up at the BlueBelle in Kaslo, B.C. This painting, and about 20 others, are being installed tomorrow morning (Thursday, March 8). I've taken a break from painting mountains and water just long enough to remember how much I love to paint the forest.

It's an aspiration of mine to add some brighter colours to my palette this year while exploring the landscapes I love to paint. A sunset seemed like the right place to start.

Tomorrow I will post photos of the installation. Stay tuned...

Poppy Painting - Mountain Poppies

Mountain Poppies
30x40 inches, acrylic on canvas

I finished this poppy painting a few days ago. It's very impasto, painted mostly with painting knives, so it's huge on texture. This is a style I started painting in last summer and find it's just perfect for my poppy paintings. The grasses and stems are so textural you can almost run your hand through them.

This painting is part of my starting line-up for spring at local gallery space, The Bluebelle, in Kaslo, B.C., that will be installed this coming Thursday (March 8).

This painting is currently available, please inquire at:

Snowy Tree Photograph

Here's another snowy tree from that recent snow storm. I think it's really neat the way the snow highlights each individual branch. I'm calling it the spider tree. Some day it may make an appearance in a painting.

I love to collect photographs, sometimes as painting reference, sometimes to document an event. I am by no means a photographer and don't even try to be. I don't know the first thing about camera settings. But I get a real kick out of taking the photos.

Abstract Flowers Painting - Les Fleurs Mauves

Les Fleurs Mauves

This abstract flowers painting, Les Fleurs Mauves, is the last print lisited in my Etsy shop for the month of February. Thank you to everyone who stopped by the shop to see a new print each day and followed along with my blog. It has been a wonderful challenge and has renewed my interest in blogging. Perhaps you've noticed the changes around here, not only in colour and design, but I've added PAGES! If you only check out one page, please check out the STUDIO TOUR (tabs at top of page).

This painting was a quick little sketch using my favourite Quinacridone Violet, a perfect offering in hopes that spring will soon arrive.

Autumn Landscape Painting - October Day

October Day
30x30 inches, acrylic on canvas

One more autumn landscape painting to show before spring arrives. This was actually painted last October when the leaves were turning. I made a conscious effort in this one to use more yellows than reds. Every once in a while I go through a phase where I'm very drawn to yellow, usually deep golden yellow. And the woods in autumn seems the perfect place to use it.

Enjoy this walk in the woods!
